O Vos Omnes
MOVING AND MEANINGFUL LENTEN MOTET

Just released for SATB unaccompanied choir

BUY HERE
Picture
O VOS OMNES, one of the great poetic masterpieces of the Hebrew Bible, was written at the beginning of the 6th century, B.C.E. as a lament for the destruction of Jerusalem. In the Christian church, it is sung or chanted during Holy Week services, including the Tenebrae and vigils. Timothy Michael Powell’s setting captures the ancient spirit of the Lament with echoing canonical chant entrances superimposed over choral drones – as if the listener hears the music from somewhere deep within a darkened cathedral, progressively coming closer.

Billy Boy
EXCITING BLUEGRASS + CHOIR!
Released on Premier Records by Salt Lake Choral Artists

BUY HERE
Picture
BILLY BOY tells the story of an early American archetypical immigrant – a veteran of King William’s wars, weary of the world and looking for a new home. Perhaps Billy plans to bring his wife over from Lough Neagh, a beautiful lake in Ulster, after he has settled? Equally possible is that Billy has fled his life in Ulster for good, including his wife, and his nostalgia is as much regret for his actions as sadness for what he has lost.

Available in both SATB and SAB, with optional band

I Want to Fly! from Saint George and the Dragon
A COLLABORATION WITH CHARLES ANTHONY SILVESTRI

Perfect for Honor Choruses and All State Choirs!

LISTEN AND PREVIEW HERE
Picture
I WANT TO FLY! is the central, celebratory chorus from Saint George and the Dragon, an oratorio for young voices with lyrics by Charles Anthony Silvestri. The work turns the traditional legend of St. George upside down by featuring a young, budding scientist, Princess Sabra, who encounters a friendly dragon, Ascalon. Together, they must convince the teen-aged knight, George, that the dragon means no harm. "Saint George and the Dragon" received an enthusiastic standing ovation at its 2013 world premiere at Lincoln Center. New York Concert Reviews called the premiere, a "stand-out performance."
Available in the original SAB and now in SATB!
Violin part included with purchase!

The Lord is On My Head
NEW WORK FOR WOMEN'S CHOIR!
Ancient 1st century prayer for Baptism

BUY HERE
Picture
THE LORD IS ON MY HEAD is the first song from a beautiful collection of ancient anonymous poetry known as the Odes of Solomon. Scholars believe the original poetry was written in either Syriac, Aramaic, or Greek, and may date as early as 100 C.E. If so, these texts may represent some of the earliest Christian worship texts! The texts resemble the Psalms, though they are distinctly Christian. They share an affinity with the Gospel of John, thought they do not reference or quote from the New Testament. Scholarly consensus is that these mysterious Odes may represent early Baptismal liturgy, because of the frequent imagery of renewal, rebirth, and water found throughout. I’ve attempted to capture the essence of this first Ode through a lilting, joyful piano accompaniment. The piano undergirds an almost chant-like song of praise that alternates with a wordless, ecstatic, and expressive melody representing thankfulness and worship.

Picture
O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM, which is the 3rd movement of my INCARNTIO MYSTERIA, is traditionally associated with the services for Christmas Day, though it is appropriate for the entire Advent and Christmas season, and throughout the year as a concert piece. The charming Latin text explores the wonder of seeing the Christ-child lying in a humble feed trough, and moves from awe and trembling to worship. I've attempted to capture these various moods and reactions through music that is at first introspective and reserved, but which changes to celebration on the word Alleluia before returning to an attitude of prayer at the end. There are numerous voice settings of the piece, and orchestrations available for each.

Picture
SINGularity (in Bb) uses overtone singing over an opening B flat drone to symbolically represent the sound of the Perseus black hole, discovered to be "singing" a Bb by the NASA Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This “music of the spheres,” morphs quickly into a rhythmically-swaying, hypnotic setting of Walt Whitman’s lovely poem "Gliding O’er All," accompanied by a subtle use of the hymn tune TERRA BEATA (This Is My Father’s World).

Take Me to the Mountain
BEST SELLER!
Premiered at Southern Division ACDA!

BUY HERE
Picture
TAKE ME TO THE MOUNTAIN is sung with joyous enthusiasm and with a rhythmic vitality which embodies the transformation, vision and resurrection celebrated in these biblical texts: 2 Kings 2:11; 2 Corinthians 12:2 and Acts 1:9–11. Though the soprano solo may be sung as written, soloists are also welcome to add something “personal” to the performance. It would be acceptable to have the soloist rejoin the choir ad lib on the final coda, perhaps singing the high note at the end. The coda should build in excitement with each repetition. If needed, the director may add a few more repeats once the entire choir has entered, and movement and clapping would not be out of place.

Wedding Mass

Major work with chamber ensemble!

Picture
WEDDING MASS IN C MAJOR (NO. 1) originated as a soaring, celebratory bridal processional which forms the basis for the Kyrie, providing a fitting contrast to the Agnus Dei theme, which represents my response to the events of September 11, 2001. The result is music that leaves the celebration of the early movements for a time in order to contemplate crisis, but which eventually returns with joy and gladness in a final catharsis. The thematic connections throughout are deliberate, particularly the parallels drawn between the Eucharist, the breaking of bread, the Lamb of God who is our bread, and the sacrificial love that is the goal of a life shared in Christ.
